Invisalign: Your Guide to Straighter Teeth

It’s official, more adults in the UK are having their teeth straightened.  According to recent data from the British Orthodontic Society (BOS), more of their members are reporting increased interest in teeth straightening treatments, as it becomes socially acceptable for adults to wear braces.

When we talk to patients about straightening their teeth and what the possibilities are, one of the treatments many have heard of is Invisalign.  This is a system of clear aligners which gradually straightens the teeth whilst being virtually invisible to others.  Though it isn’t always suitable, based on the severity of the issues, Invisalign remains a favourite here at Quay Dental Care and is a popular choice amongst our patients at our Plymouth and Paignton practices.

If you have not heard of Invisalign and are worried about crooked or misaligned teeth denting your confidence, please read on as we share our Invisalign guide to straighter teeth.

Invisalign – what is it?

Invisalign is a virtually invisible teeth straightening treatment developed by Align Technology, which uses 3D computer technology and customisation to treat a wide range of people who want straighter teeth.

How does it work?

Invisalign uses a series of removable clear aligners which are custom made to the individual. Each aligner controls how much the teeth will move, which teeth should move and for how long.  When worn in succession, the aligners gradually move the position of the teeth to achieve the overall desired effect – a straighter smile.  Unlike traditional metal braces, there are no metal brackets or wires, so it is much less likely that others will notice that you are undergoing treatment.

How long does the treatment take?

As with all teeth straightening treatments, the time taken to achieve the desired results depends upon the complexity of the individual case, though it is generally a similar time span to that of traditional braces treatments.  During your initial consultation and any follow up appointments, your dentist or orthodontist will advise you on the estimated treatment time.

Does it hurt?

Generally, no, the treatment does not hurt but some patients experience a little discomfort or feeling of pressure on the teeth for a few days when they insert a new aligner at each stage of the treatment.  This is, however, nothing to worry about, in fact it shows that the aligners are working and the discomfort generally disappears after a day or two.

What can I eat and drink during treatment?

The great thing about Invisalign treatment is that you can remove your aligners to eat and drink, so there are no real stipulations on what you can and cannot consume during treatment.  This also makes it easier to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy as you can also remove your aligners to complete your twice daily oral health care routine – to include brushing and flossing.

Is there any follow up treatment or aftercare?

It is usually advisable after undergoing any orthodontic treatment to follow up by wearing a retainer for a given period of time.  This helps the teeth to maintain their new position.  You will be advised on this as your treatment comes to an end, but we do recommend you adhere to the advice as it makes the results so much better.

We hope this has answered many of your questions about Invisalign, and how it can help provide you with straighter teeth and give you the confidence to smile.  If you would like to find out more about this teeth straightening treatment, please contact your local Quay Dental Care practice or ask at your next appointment.
